One of the lead vocals of band Durbin, Shahid shot into the spotlight through a hit song rendered with Shubhomita, the renowned singer from Kolkata. Later, he did an album “Ek Jibone 2” along with her. His solo album “Nilambori”, nominated for popular Meril-Prothom Alo awards, also entertained music lovers.
Recently interviewed the popular composer-musician.

Since when have you been involved in music?
Shahid: I was so fond of music early on that I would take my bicycle and head off miles to listen to songs. As I could play the drum, bamboo flute and violin adeptly, I always rushed to ashor (musical soiree). After the completion of my studies, I shifted to Dhaka to start my music career.

Tell us about the formation of band Durbin?
Shahid: On my arrival in Dhaka, I started writing in a newspaper as many of my friends were journalists. When I was an MBA student, some friends and I formed the band in 2004. We could not practice very much due to scarcity of space. We released our first album “Durbin” with the help of a number of well-wishers.

You are widely known as Ek Jiboner Shahid; tell us about it.
Shahid: To me, a singer generally comes into the spotlight through one or two songs. It is really a great achievement for me that my fans picked me as Ek Jiboner Shahid. I want to make many such popular songs.

Tell us about your solo albums.
Shahid: In 2008, I released an album. In 2011, my second album “Nilambori” was released while the third, “Nil Chhoan” hit the audio market in 2013.

Do you enjoy working with upcoming artistes?
Shahid: I always try to assist newcomers when I have the leisure. Everyone should work with experienced and new artistes; after all I was once a fresher in the music world. Many newcomers are doing praiseworthy work.

What about your venture into playback?
Shahid: I did my first playback for the movie “Excuse Me”. Recently, I worked on a song for the film “Welcome 2”. I'm now busy doing playback for several other projects.

Which form of musical performance appeals to you?
Shahid: I love working everywhere. But I have a fascination for stage performances.

Defining factors in Chandni's career

National award-winning actress-dancer Chandni says she has had several defining factors of success in her career. In a recent conversation with The Daily Star, she looked back at how they shaped her career.

First factor: Dance
“I've been involved in dancing from a very early age. I took dance lessons at Bulbul Academy of Fine Arts (BAFA). I have given dance performances at a number of stage shows both at home and abroad. Later, when I started acting, I was able to emote better due to my dance training. So, the first turning point in my career is dance.”

“Although I appeared for a few movies, 'Dukhai' – for which I received the national film award, was a definite turning point in my career. I also won an award for playing the character of Jamila in the film 'Lalsalu'. Later, I acted in the movie 'Joyjatra'. The three celluloid projects are major achievements of my career.”

Third factor: TV plays
“I played the role of Runi in the drama 'Bandhan', directed by Afsana Mimi. The hugely popular play was a major success in my career.”

Fourth factor: Family
“Without my family's support and inspiration, I couldn't have reached where I am today. My mother, in particular, has made a great contribution to my success.”

Playwrights Himu Akram's Interview

Himu Akram is one of the most prominent playwrights in the country of present time. We took his interview recently. Here is the interview: 
Q: Tell me about yourself
Himu: While I like to say about myself, I would like to refer me as a drama lover. I stay awake for the drama. Move from here to there. My dream characters always detour in me, around myself. Here is their long journey with me. I discover me inside of the intense from time to time. There is no existence of nearer one in that intense. Don’t have friend or relative. 
Q: Where did you grow up?
Himu: I have grown up in Noakhali. I have passed my whole childhood and boyhood in the tiny but my dearest town Maijdicot. My childhood covers kiting on the roof of government residential area, playing football in the field, swimming in the wide water body. It is the story of Avirampur, story of my village. I had to pass my whole daytime searching for bird nest. 
Q: When and what made you get into direction?
Himu: Bashonti Ronga Saree was the lighthouse for me as a director. It was the first drama composed by me. Staff producer of ATN Bangladesh produced it. Then, producer Belal Ahmed produced Upokul Express. It is my most favourite story. Once several producers produced the drama composed by me, I started dreaming of to be a director. I started dreaming to taking shots of the characters of the story by camera. Name of the said dream is to be a drama director. 
Q: Did you get any institutional training in this field?
Himu: Before direction of the drama, I completed two superb courses from ‘Film Archive’ and ‘National Mass Media Institute.’ Then I introduced myself as assistant director to producer Ferdous Hasan. After working for only 11 months as assistant director, I gathered experience of more than 200 dramas comprising single and serial based dramas. At last, I ran to the sea. I produced a drama of dream named Sagor Dakichhey Taar-e. It is my first dream, first love and first production. 
Q: What do you think the present state of drama making in our media industry?
Himu: The present condition of the drama production is now better obviously. The producers are investing more because of its better condition. The directors are making the drama. We have lot of directors, new and old, for whom the spectators keep waiting to see their drama. Our dramas are so classical that spectators see the dramas devotedly even after pain of the advertisement. 
Q: Tell about your current and next project
Himu: My mega serial Nojir Bihin Nojor Ali is being broadcasted on RTV now. It is being telecast four days of the week. Moreover, I am going to start two other mega serial titled Mushkil Asan Company and Habilder Talkies from my production firm Juboraj Films.
